Eagle CAD is a free PCB design tool for printed circuit board. It is an easy-to-use tool solution used by tens of thousands of engineers, researchers and makers around the world
WIZnet will provides some tips for you to create the library using Eagle CAD. In Eagle CAD, the library is composed of Symbol, Package & Device.
1. What is Symbol?
Symbol is a kind of drawing to show the pin information and its location of the parts. Below is the symbol of W5500. In here, we will draw a symbol of W5500 as its pins are arranged in order to understand the characteristic and pin assignment of W5500 only with a circuit.
2. To create a library
- After executing the Eagle CAD, click Options => Directories and add the folder in which your library will be saved.
- Click File => New => Library, you can see the window for library creationg
- When library window appears, save it as “W5500” in the folder that you created above. You can see the file of ‘W5500.lbr’
- If you click the symbol button as shown in below, a new window will appear. Input W5500 and click OK.
- To draw a Symbol
- Set the Grid in the library window as below. (1inch = 1000mil = 25.4mm = 25400mic)
- If you use “Wire”, “Circle”, “Arc”, “Rect” or “Polygon” tool in the left side of the tool, you can draw various symbols. As we are going to draw the symbol of W5500 using the rectangle.
- Now add the pins by clicking the “Pin” at the left tool menu. At the “Directing” set the pin as “pas”
NC – Not Connected :
In – Input :
Out – Output :
I/O – In/Output :
OC – Open Collector or open drain :
Hiz – High impedance output :
Pas – Passive :
Pwr – Power input pin Vcc,Gnd,Vss,Vdd and etc)
Sup – General supply pin
- After adding a pin, click “Info” icon and edit the “Name” for the pin. You had better change the name of all pins by referring to the datasheet. If so, you can easily understand the characteristic of a pin.
- To add the name and value of a symbol
- If you select the “Text” tool, a text window will be displayed. Input “>Name” and set the layer as “95 name”.
- Open text window again and input “>Value”, and set the layer as “96 Value”
- When you draw the circuit, “>Name” will indicate the Ref. No of the part (such as U1, U2). In the”>Value”, the name of the part (such as W5500) will be input.
