DIY Home Automation

details

Project Description

This project is for home automation. The author says it is hard and costly(time mainly) to build own home automation system. So the author posts to help user who want to build own home automation. The author is posting step by step over long period of time and it is not completed yet.

He builds basic nodes: temperature and humidity sensors and RF module. And Wireless to Ethernet Gateway using MQTT.

nodes

                                                              <Nodes>

gateway

                                                             <Gateway>

Raspberry Pi server

<OpenHAB server with Raspberry Pi>

Step 1. Understanding the basic Hardware/Software Architecture.

Preparation material.

  1. Home Wireless Network (WIFI)
  2. Wireless > Ethernet Gateway
  3. Computer/Server running openHAB
  4. MQTT Broker
  5. Sensors
  6. Actuators
  7. Micro controller boards (Arduino rocks!) as a ‘Node’
    material

Step 2. Building the Wireless to Ethernet Gateway (using MQTT)

Prepare material

Wireless to Ethernet Kit

  • 1 x Arduino UNO R3 board
  • 1 x 15cm UNO USB cable (used to upload code and power the board – not shown)
  • 1 x Uno bumper (to sit your Uno on)
  • 1 x Arduino Ethernet Shield
  • 1 x 1m Ethernet Cable (not shown)
  • 1 x NRF24L01+ 2.4GHz Wireless Transceiver (‘aka the radio’)
  • 1 x 7 x Male to Female jumper wires to wire up the radio to the shield – 20cm, but you can use any length you may have. MySensors.org suggest the shorter the better, but I’ve never experienced any problems with 20cm ones.

Result

gateway1

gateway2

Step 3.  Setting up a Raspberry Pi as your Server running openHAB

Raspberry Pi server
